Silence and Solitude

Every quarter, our church has a specific focus on a spiritual discipline to help us know and show Jesus at a deeper level. Currently, we are focusing on silence and solitude.

On this page you will find resources on what silence and solitude is, resources for your family, books to read, and podcast recommendations.

Definition

"At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:25-30

Solitude is ultimately about building a quiet inner room with God we can return to at any time. It’s learning to still our minds and be attentive to God. We seek both silence and solitude so that we can have an intimate relationship with God and hear his voice.

There are lots of Scriptures that refer to silence & solitude especially in the life of Jesus:
-Jesus goes to the wilderness to prepare for his public ministry (Luke 4:1-2, 14-15)
-Jesus retreats after hard work (Mark 6:30-32)
-Jesus uses silence and solitude to work through grief (Matthew 14:1-13)
-Jesus prayed in silence and solitude before calling his disciples (Luke 6:12-16)
-Jesus sought solitude in a time of distress (Luke 22:39-44)
-Jesus sought silence and solitude (Luke 5:12-16)
